Mere Lava Island, Vanuatu - John Seach
Banks Islands, Torba Province

Mere Lava Island is located 51 km east of Gaua Island in northern Vanuatu. It is a dormant volcano which rises steeply from the ocean.

The island was reached by Quiros in 1606 and Bougainville in 1768. The volcanic cone is divided by an E-W fault which crosses the crater. The crater is called Durdurlav (big hole), and contains a vent inside called Durdurwirig (small hole).

A large shallow focus earthquake hit close to Mere Lava Island in December 2002. Extensive damage occurred on the island.
