Malo Island is located 3 km off the south coast of Espiritu Santo Island. It is 17 km long and 13 km wide. The island is very fertile and is noted for copra production.
Malo contains the first recorded permanent settlement in Vanuatu. Lapita people settled on the island in about 1400 BC. In 1768 Bougainville landed on the island.
The water south of the island is called Bougainville Strait.
