Aneityum Island, Vanuatu - John Seach
Tafea Province

Aneityum is the southern most of the main Vanuatu islands. Only Matthew and Hunter Islands are further south. The island contains 84 species or orchid, and some remaining sandalwood trees, which escaped logging in 1800's and 1900's.

There is a 50km walking trail around the island. The population lives around the coast. The flora of Aneityum is more like that of Australia than Vanuatu due to its southern latitude. Petroglyphs are found on rocks scattered around the island. They show representations of sun, moon, stars, people, birds, fish, and geometrical designs.

Aneityum Island is the product of two coalesced, basaltic stratovolcanoes. The two volcanoes are: Inrerow Atamwan (812m) and Nanawarez (804m). The last eruptions were more than 11,000 years ago.
